Frighteningly enough, those are carved wooden angels. I thought angels were supposed to be comforting. Silly me.
Oh, I shouldn't admit to this (cause it'll raise my dork flag way high) but...there was a Doctor Who episode the season before last that had scary angels in it -- and the wooden advertising ones are like mini versions of the ones in the episode. Veddy veddy scary. (Not sure I ever made a point here -- the angels scared it out of me.)
